What is the Orton-Gillingham approach?
The Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching is based on the work and research of Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham and the scientific research of best reading practices for people who struggle to learn how to read.

Orton-Gillingham strives to teach students that there is a reliable system to learning how to read and spell that can be trusted. The approach takes each student through a process of critical thinking, deep understanding, and strategies which can be applied to long lasting results for literacy.

Trained Orton-Gillingham educators follow these principles when they plan and execute a lesson.
Systemic & Sequential
Lessons follow a specific order or progression and build on previously taught material.
Multisensory
Visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic techniques are incorporated simultaneously.
Prescriptive
Teachers make decisions for instruction based specifically of the needs of the individual child.
Diagnostic
Teachers assess and create lessons based on where the child is at their current reading ability.
Explicit
Teachers use direct instruction. Concepts and skills are taught for mastery.
Flexible
Teachers have the freedom to change direction of a lesson plan based on student's performance.
